GM Bolt – will it lead to a Cadillac EV?

The latest and greatest news flying around cyberspace was the announce of the Chevy Bolt EV concept at the North American International Auto Show in January, and, more recently, the confirmation of production of a Bolt EV concept based electric vehicle due in late 2016.

The Chevy Bolt EV was confirmed to be headed to production at a pre-Chicago Auto Show breakfast on February 12th. Head of General Motors, Alan Batey, was speaking at the breakfast, and said the the “message from consumers about the Bolt EV concept was clear and unequivocal: Build It.” GM is moving quickly on the Bolt EV as they think the electric vehicle has the potential to “completely shake up the status quo for electric vehicles.”

Since GM saw such success with the Volt, they decided to port the drivetrain over into the Cadillac ELR. If the Bolt sells as well as GM thinks it will (30,000 units a year), then it’s likely there will be a pure-electric vehicle in Cadillac’s short-term history.

What could Cadillac do to the Bolt EV to make it more of a premium vehicle? Perhaps something similar to the SRX crossover, but smaller, would be a good place to start.

If GM can deliver the Bolt EV in late 2016, they could be a year or 2 ahead of a LEAF with similar range, and likely ahead of Tesla’s Model 3.
